Dear Member of Congress, My heart breaks for the people of Afghanistan, who, after 20 years of war, now have to go back to living under the same Taliban rule they endured before the war began. While I don't disagree with the decision to finally end the war, it is critical that we not just abandon the women, members of minority groups, and those who worked with the U.S. during the occupation who now fear for their lives under Taliban rule. Please ensure that all vulnerable Afghans have an expedited legal path for immigrating to the United States. This is not the time to give in to anti-immigrant sentiment - after 20 years of war we have a responsibility to vulnerable Afghans that we cannot ignore. If Congress abdicates our responsibility to protect the Afghans who worked with us, or who depended on U.S. promises for their security, then we will have betrayed not just our Afghan allies, but also our soldiers who fought to establish a stable government for the Afghan people, and ourselves by abandoning the values that made this country great. Please make every effort possible to evacuate vulnerable Afghans from Kabul and other areas. Please also focus U.S. diplomatic efforts on ensuring that neighboring countries open their doors to Afghan refugees. Finally, and above all, please ensure that all vulnerable Afghans have an expedited legal path for immigrating to the United States - starting by lifting the 2022 cap on refugee admissions to 200,000 or more. This is not the time to give in to anti-immigrant sentiment - after 20 years of war we have a responsibility to vulnerable Afghans that we cannot ignore. Sincerely,
