Dear Member of Congress, There are only 40 detainees left in Guantanamo yet our country spends over half a billion dollars a year to keep them there. Some of the people held there were tortured in U.S. custody and most have never been charged with or tried for any crime. Those that have been charged mostly await trial in the military commissions system, an unjust mockery of a justice system that has, almost 20 years after the 9/11 attacks, failed to even begin trial for the alleged 9/11 conspirators. Guantanamo is a failed prison that makes a mockery of the values that our country purports to stand for. Despite this, Congress has continually stood in the way of efforts to close the prison at Guantanamo by including provisions in the yearly National Defense Authorization Act that attempt to prohibit detainees from being brought to the U.S. for trial or even for necessary medical treatment. Please quit wasting my tax dollars propping up an unjust, immoral, expensive failure of a prison system in Guantanamo. President Biden says he wants to close Guantanamo. Please support him in this by passing a clean NDAA, not one that includes short-sighted restrictions on transferring Guantanamo detainees. Sincerely,
