24 Years Too Long: Close Guantanamo
January 11, 2026 marks the 24th anniversary of the opening of the post-9/11 U.S. detention facility at Guantánamo Bay — a prison that is synonymous with torture, indefinite detention, and the erosion of fundamental human rights. Fifteen men remain in post-9/11 detention in the facility, 6 of whom have never been charged with a crime and 3 of whom have long been cleared for release by U.S. national security agencies.
Contact your Members of Congress and let them know you support closing Guantánamo and that you have not forgotten the fifteen men who remain there.
Thank You
Help share the message that the detention center at Guantánamo must close - consider hosting a vigil in your community! You can join others around the country in monthly vigils on the first Wednesday of the month, or host on a day of your own choosing. With just three people, you can hold a banner, snap a picture, and share your commitment to close Guantánamo with a local newspaper and on social media. NRCAT has a litany and prayers, as well as background information on the issue. Contact Rev. T.C. Morrow at tmorrow@nrcat.org if you would like us to send you a "Close Guantanamo" banner, at no charge.
