Ask your Members of Congress to Close Guantanamo

Message:

Dear Member of Congress, I am writing to ask you to lift the restrictions on transferring detainees out of Guantanamo - particularly those that block detainees from being transferred to the U.S. for trial or for medical treatment. The prison at Guantanamo Bay costs over half a billion dollars a year to run yet holds only 39 prisoners. Some of the people held there were tortured by the U.S. government - and most have never been tried for or even charged with any crime. Further, the ad hoc "justice" system in place at Guantanamo - the military commissions - has failed to even begin trial for those accused of planning the 9/11 attacks. There is no moral defense of a prison where prisoners were tortured and where the majority are held without charge or trial. There is no practical defense of a prison that costs more than $13 million per prisoner per year. The fact that Congress has allowed this to go on for 20 years is a betrayal of the American people. Lift the restrictions on transferring detainees out of Guantanamo and close the prison there for good. Sincerely,
