Contact Your Members of Congress: Close Guantanamo
Each year Congress passes the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA), which authorizes the Department of Defense to conduct its various activities. For more than a decade, Congress has included language in the NDAA that bars Guantanamo prison detainees from being transferred to the U.S. for any reason – even for trial or for necessary medical treatment.
The NDAA has also been used to limit transfers to other countries, barring some countries from receiving Guantanamo detainees entirely, and putting bureaucratic hurdles in place that make all transfers unnecessarily complicated. This year though, Congress can support President Biden in ending indefinite detention and closing the internationally recognized symbol of torture that is the prison at Guantanamo by passing an NDAA that lifts the restrictions on transfers.
You can help by telling your Members of Congress that you support closing Guantanamo.
